Alberta Drivers License Vision Requirements

In order to be a safe and proactive driver, it’s important to have good vision, or the proper eyewear to attain that vision standard. While you may meet the vision requirements for the standard Class 5 license, many people are unaware that there are different prerequisites for the numerous classes of licenses. Should you have difficulties with the basic testing services available while at a registry office, you may be referred to an optometrist for further testing. If this is the case, SD Eye Care Clinics are fully capable of providing the proper exam for your specific needs.

Myopia Control Soft Contacts + Orthokeratology (ORTHO-K) Fittings

We are currently facing a myopia epidemic in todays ever evolving society. More people today are becoming shortsighted than they were years ago. This is due to the over exposure of screens whether it be gaming consoles or smart phones or computer screens. We are spending less time outdoors and more time inside. Being outside gives visual feedback that enables and regulates eye growth and refractive development.

Early intervention is key when dealing with the growing incidence of young people. SD Eye offers testing and fitting sessions to help reduce the myopia progression. Orthokeratology lenses help patients with myopia. The lenses are used to be worn overnight and help the cornea to aid in beneficial shape change. Keratoconus + Advanced Corneal Contact Lens Fittings e.g Scleral Lens Fitting

Irregular astigmatism represents one of the most problematic situations a practitioner must manage. Keratoconus, an extreme case of corneal irregularity, presents a very perplexing fitting situation because of its extreme corneal asymmetry, steep corneal curvatures, and irregular astigmatism. This condition reduces a patient’s vision with increasing amounts of irregular corneal optics, corneal thinning, and corneal scarring. This is one area where GP lenses have a significant advantage over soft contacts.

Bailey Lovie Contrast Sensitivity Testing

Contrast sensitivity defines the threshold between the visible and invisible, which has obvious significance for basic and clinical vision science. While printed charts are still in use, computer testing is becoming more popular because it offers efficient adaptive measurement of the threshold for a wide range of stimuli. Both basic and clinical studies usually want to know fundamental visual capability, regardless of the observer’s subjective criterion. Criterion effects are minimized by the use of an objective task: multiple-alternative forced-choice detection or identification. Having many alternatives reduces the guessing rate, which makes each trial more informative, so fewer trials are needed. Finally, populations who may experience crowding or target confusion should be tested with one target at a time.

  • Contrast sensitivity defines the threshold between the visible and invisible.

  • Threshold contrast is 1% for a remarkably wide range of targets and conditions.

  • While printed charts are still in use, computer testing allows the use of efficient adaptive methods to accurately estimate the threshold for a diverse range of stimuli and conditions.

Optical Coherence Technology

The Optical Coherence Technology is an imaging technique used to capture detailed images from within the retina. It captures these images by using light. Your optometrist can use this to determine the best treatment for glaucoma and other diseases.

Children’s Exams

When should you have your child’s eyes checked?

Ideally, all children should have their eyes examined by an eye doctor at least by the time they enter school. In fact, the American Optometric Association suggests that children should have their first regular eye exam at 6 months. Follow-up exams should occur at age 3 and again just prior to starting school. If a problem is found, more frequent care may be necessary.

About Our Prescriptions

Eyeglass prescriptions contain the information required to create your corrective lenses.  You may understand what the Eye Doctor means when she says you are nearsighted or farsighted, but you probably don’t understand the fields on your prescription.

OD and OS (Oculus Dexter and Oculus Sinister) – Simply: Left Eye and Right Eye

OU (Oculus Uterque) – Both Eyes

(Some doctors have adopted RE and LE to clarify Right Eye and Left Eye)

The information for your right eye (OD) comes before the information for your left eye (OS) on a prescription.
